How do I KNOW if I am singing IN TUNE?

Pay ATTENTION to any TENSION!

Everyone wants to sing in tune, but how do we KNOW that we are singing the correct pitch? What does it really mean when we are “out of tune”?

Music is organized sound waves, created by striking an object or by moving air.

When we sing, air flows from our Lungs out over our vibrating vocal cords to create sounds.

When the sound waves we create with our voice clash with the sound waves of the music, we are singing “out of tune”.

The human mind likes patterns. When we are singing and drift away from a predictable musical pattern ( like the major scale or the melody of a song) we are singing “out of tune”.

You can’t fix your pitch until you can NOTICE when you are out of tune.

TRY THIS EXERCISE

  1. Hold a pitch as long as you can. Is your pitch wavering? Is it moving up or down, or is it staying perfectly the same?

  2. Now, record yourself holding that note with a voice memo app or with a recording program. Listen back! Was the note the same the whole time, or did it move?

  3. Now, try singing the same note with yourself. See if you can hold it the same the whole time.

  4. Now try to bend that pitch up and down by sliding around the note. This sounds easy, but is pretty tricky! When you are off of the pitch, you will feel TENSION in the sound.

LISTEN to yourself singing while you are practicing, and pay ATTENTION to any TENSION you hear between the pitches you are singing and the pitches in the music.
