Small Vocal Health Tips That Make a Big Difference in Your Singing Voice
Improving anything in your life is easy. It just takes a small habit, used every day, over a long period of time.
It’s the dedication to the habit over years that is difficult!
This is especially true for musicians, who know that a small daily practice can drastically improve playing over time.
For singers, this all starts with the health of the vocal cords.
Make sure you’re taking care of your voice every day, and instill these habits before you start training your voice.
DRINK LOTS OF WATER
If your vocal cords are dry, they are not as flexible. Make sure you are keeping a bottle of water close by at ALL times.
GET A LOT OF REST
Get at least 8 hours of sleep every night so that your voice has time to rest and your body has time to feel rejuvenated. Rest is even more important when you know you have a performance coming up. There is nothing worse that pushing through a class or performance when your voice is tired and depleted.
TRY NOT TO TALK TOOOOOO MUCH
This is usually difficult for singers. We are usually extroverted personalities who love to socialize. But, it’s so important to give our voices a break. Stop talking when you’re working on your voice!
DO NOT SCREAM OR YELL
Avoid dramatic use of the vocal cords for screaming and yelling. When you scream, your vocal cords “slap” together, and over time this can cause them to become swollen and you can lose your voice.
WORK WITH A VOICE INSTRUCTOR
If you feel like you are attempting more advanced singing, please work with a qualified vocal instructor who puts the health of your voice above all. It’s so important that we take care of our bodies so that we can make music for the rest of our lives.
