Help! I Hate the Sound of My Singing Voice!

You know the feeling! You’ve been working hard on your songs, your technique, and your performance, and get on stage and KILL IT! You look good, feel good, and sing your heart out.

BUT THEN your friend posts a video of your performance on social media.. and the dread sets in.

“I SOUND HORRIBLE!” you cry. “I will never sing again!”

But wait…

Did you know that it’s completely normal to hate the sound of your own voice?

All of us are used to hearing our voices from INSIDE, and feeling our voice when we use it. This means we usually perceive our voice to be much LOWER than it is to others.

When we hear a recording of our voice, we tend to think it sounds much higher and harsher than how we imagine it to be.

It all makes sense…

Have you ever gone camping or on a long road trip where you didn’t look at yourself in a mirror for a few days? We completely lose the idea of what we look like, and instead rely fully on HOW OUR BODY FEELS.

This same thing happens to our singing voice. We hear our voice from the inside, but rarely hear it back.

When you start performing and recording your own voice, you’ll be shocked at first, but you’ll get used to it!

Don’t let your perception of how your voice sounds slow you down! Focus on how you felt before, during, and after your performance.

Were you relaxed?
Was your voice flexible and responsive?
Were you connecting emotionally with the audience and the music?
Were you prepared for your performance with your lyrics memorized?
Did you show up on time and with a great attitude?

Keep working on your singing voice and one day, you’ll be satisfied when you listen to a recording of your own voice.
